The Captain`s Story
An intriguing war novel.
Many war books especially naval war stories, have been written about World War Two and before. Some even delve further back into naval history to the days of sail.
However, very few naval fiction books have been written about the Falklands War. As war was never actually declared by either Argentina or Great Britain, we should actually refer to it as the Falklands Conflict.
At the age of thirty three, Commander Mike Mansfield is the youngest ever `Captain` in the Royal Navy. His first command is the type 42 destroyer, HMS Devonport. The weight of responsibility rests heavily on his shoulders. He is relentlessly tormented in a constant battle to prove he is up to the job, not only to his crew, but also to himself.
Does he have what it takes to overcome the doubts and fears of the two hundred and fifty two officers and men under his command?
Can he gain their respect?
His estranged wife Gill, a QARNNS (Queen Alexandra Royal Naval Nursing Service) nursing officer, is the one true love of his life. He fell hopelessly in love with her as a patient in The Royal Naval Hospital Stonehouse, Plymouth when he was sixteen. It was love at first sight. After many years in the Service together, she would now like them both to leave The Royal Navy. Navy life is all they have ever known, and she would now like them both to make a fresh start in `Civvy Street.` Maybe even start a family.
However, Mike feels an overwhelming desire to fulfil his destiny. Even though he`s not really sure exactly what that destiny is right now. As if he doesn`t have enough problems, his old enemy from his days as a sixteen year old Junior Seaman is never far away.
Gordon Bates has only one real pleasure in life; to inflict pain, misery and hurt into the lives of others, especially Mike. Luckily, his best friend Petty Officer Andy Hitchen is usually on hand to help and support him. Their unbreakable bond of friendship born from the time they joined-up together back in 1966.
Mike eventually finds himself embroiled in a war of attrition with his own insecurities, as he tries to conquer the inner demons which have plagued him throughout his life. His continual battle with mood swings, depression and low self- esteem, fuel an on-going saga in his own personal war. Not to mention his Achilles heel; seasickness.
Despite being a professional sailor for all his adult life, its ugly spectre still haunts him to this day. Whilst on NATO Exercises with other warships in the Mediterranean Sea, practising and honing their naval warfare techniques, an unfortunate maritime incident occurs. Mike finds himself now facing a court martial.
Will he lose his Commission and be dishonourably discharged from the Navy, or will justice prevail?
With his career in tatters and his marriage on the rocks, it seems things can`t get much worse.
Then, another fight appears on the horizon. The ruthless ruling Military Junta in Argentina invade The Falkland Islands. HMS Devonport is sent to the South Atlantic as part of a British Task Force, to reclaim them back for Britain.
Can Mike rise to the challenges ahead?
Does he have the courage within himself to equal the bravery of his crew?
Is he prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice to win back The Falkland Islands?
Does he have what it takes to help win The Falklands War, and bring his ship and her crew back home safely?
Could this be his true destiny?

The Captain`s Story edition by Ray J Cowling Literature Fiction eBooks

There are war books and then there are special war books out there on the market. But in my opinion The Captain's Story is a very special war book, and not just another ordinary war book for a number of reasons. The very first reason is more than obvious and it is because of the book's central focus. It is not focused on a common war event that everyone has written about under the sun. If anything, the topic of The Captain's Story is centred on a war incident other than just World War II, which everyone writes about and has been written about repeatedly. The Captain's Story is all about the build-up to the Falklands War, or Falklands Conflict, as war was never really declared in essence by either Great Britain or Argentina. It culminates with the Battle of San Carlos. This is one of the very few and excellent naval fiction books out there. The Captain's Story is a truly wonderful read from start to finish.
It has the awesome power to possess the reader the second they start to read it, and keep them turning the pages eagerly until they finish the book in entirety. The book has great plot and is filled with excellent characters who are so very true to life in the naval military world. Commander Mike Mansfield is a man who is driven to get the glory he deserves. Not only is he the Royal Navy`s youngest ever captain, but he has an issue to constantly prove himself. This proving himself to himself and others is paramount over everything else in his life. He also struggles with wanting to gain the respect of his crew. At the same time, he wonders if he can be truly responsible for all of these special 250 souls, who are under his command on this ship. So, The Captain's Story is a book that is not only riveting, but also very interesting and engaging in its own unique way.
It is definitely a book to be recommended for those who love to read war books on all fronts. Commander Mike Mansfield has his own special destiny to fulfil in the pages of this book. A book in essence that is about war in detail, but a book that also contends with the various personal struggles that many do have when having a military career. Sometimes, you have to make choices, and the choices made for your job aren't always about being the best choices in life. Choices from the heart also matter, as well, and Commander Mansfield must decide in his own way what is the most important to him in the great scheme of things. Duty or love? Love or duty? Can both go together? Read the book to learn more.

The Captain`s Story edition by Ray J Cowling Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This reads like a combination of Harlequin Romance meets Boy's Own Story. The whole story line strains credulity an up from the ranks office who makes full commander in his early thirties, fraternizes with enlisted men under his command, constantly deserts the bridge and command of his ship during wartime to perform duties belonging to subordinates, etc. , looses his ship but finds true romance and lives happily ever after with his now reconciled wife. The author demonstrates very little understanding of the details of weapons and systems used in the Falklands War Type 42 destroyers did have CWIS during the Falklands War, Mirages were armed with 20 mm can which would make mincemeat of anyone they hit, rather than merely putting a ding in their personal jewelry. The only realistic parts are the flashbacks to booze-ups on shore leave.

Nicholas Monssarat (the Cruel Sea) and A. L. Raynor (Then Enemy Below) will be rolling in their graves if this is the standard for modern Royal Navy fiction.
Excellent story. My only criticism would b that it was told in a series of flashbacks.
If you like naval books and want a different slant (this is Canadian), this is for you. I liked it and am glad I read it.
It is obvious that the author has little or no knowledge of on-board naval precedure or terminology. Some of the story surrounding the Falklands 'incident' is less than accurate and bears little relevence to the factual issues.
An excellent read that keeps the reader wanting keep reading even though its late and you have to get up early in the morning.
The trials of a ships captain and how he got to that rank and the horrors of the Falkland's war.
This was a good story only spoiled by some odd points. Toward the end, when the climatic battle is about to occur, the captain runs off and spends time on other ships, landing craft even a small boat. Then the story had a very "campy" ending.
Mr. Cowling naval fiction on the Falkland War's is very well thought out. It is a fictional Ships Captain and his trails and tribulations of command at sea. HIs personel demonds.
I usually dont write reviews of of fictional books this one I enjoyed it was a very fast pace book chock with twist and turns, I rather not give away the story but for the kindle price it is well worth the purchase.
